My honest thoughts on Police Academy 8It was back in November of 2008 on BBC's Five Live, Steve Guttenberg (Carey Mahoney, who appeared in the first four Police Academy films) confirmed that the movie is possibly getting made, all of the original cast members from the previous seven movies will be returning (the only exceptions being David Graf (Eugene Tackleberry, who had appeared in all seven films), Tab Thacker (Tommy "House" Conklin, who only appeared in Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol and Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach), and Billie Bird (who appeared in Police Academy 4 and Police Academy 6: City Under Siege as two different characters)), and Guttenberg will be chosen to direct the film, which is slated for release in either 2010 or 2011.
Like I said in my Police Academy Month essay I posted seven months ago, Police Academy was one of my favourite childhood movie series, right up there with Back to the Future and Ghostbusters. Sure, the Police Academy series has been trashed to hell by fans due to its six sequels, but I think that Police Academy 8 is the last chance for the franchise to redeem itself. C'mon, Police Academy 7: Mission to Moscow was absolute trash!
Anyways, another good reason why Police Academy 8 should be made is because of classic movie franchises getting one last sequel before heading off into the sunset. Already there has been Rocky 6, Die Hard 4, Rambo 4, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and coming up, Beverly Hills Cop 4. If I can contribute any suggestions to Warner Bros. on what Police Academy 8's story should have, here's what I'd suggest: have Mahoney and friends come out of retirement for one last case and training one more group of cadets, while still getting up to all sorts of mischief!
